Storage Field Day 6 Day 1 – Avere, StorMagic, Tegile

SFD6 Delegate BriefingStorage Field Day 6, Day 1! The day before was spent acclimatizing to the 9 hours of time travel but on Wednesday it was finally about to begin. I had a general idea of what was waiting for me: first of all it’s going to be an exchausting, challenging but also fun week, and also: 99% of Americans likes stroopwafels. So armed with a bag of them I headed to the SFD6 breakfast briefing. Stephen laid out the ground rules, explained the newbies what was about to happen and off we went to the first vendors of the week: Avere, StorMagic and Tegile.

Storage Field Day 6 Day 0 – Sightseeing and Yankee swap

Storage Field Day 6 Dinner and Yankee swapSo as I posted a while ago, I was invited to attend Storage Field Day 6 in San Jose, California a while ago. Which is happening right now all the way till November 7th 2014. Today was day 0 with a big get together of the 12 delegates and Stephen, Tom and Claire from GestaltIT, the people organizing all the TechField days. After an very tasty dinner at Genji, a local Japanese steakhouse we performed a ritual called the Yankee swap: everyone brings a present. One by one you either decide to keep your gift or swap it with someones gift. Once everyone has made their decision you open it up and be amazed! Good fun!

Storage Field Day 6 is around the corner!

Storage Field Day
The Storage Field Day Logo

Last year a little bird told me about Tech Field Day: a big knowledge sharing event where multiple vendors inform a select group of people or delegates about what’s hot, new or revolutionary in their field or lineup. There’s multiple types of Field Days: networking, virtualization and (of course) storage. Storage Field Day 6 will be held on 5-7 November 2014 in Silicon Valley and… WOOHOOO, I’m attending!

Among the presenters for this year are Avere Systems, Coho Data, NEC Storage, Nexenta Systems, Nimble Storage, PureStorage, StorMagic and Tegile. I’ll be honest: I’ve only heard of a couple of these names, so I’ve got a bit of reading up to do in the next couple of days and I can’t wait to hear what they bring to the table.

I’d like to thank the Tech Field Day team (Stephen, Claire and Tom) for inviting me and flying me to San Jose next week. I’m looking forward to an exciting and challenging week filled with tech and discussions. Keep an eye on the Storage Field Day 6 page for the live stream of the event and this page for updates during the week! And maybe I’ll sneak in a picture of the Golden Gate bridge if I get the chance… 😉

EMC Elect Redefining Possible at MegaLaunch IV

(C) Sean Thulin“Check your email ;)”. That was the first Twitter DM I read one sleepy morning in June. It’ll suffice to say, a minute later I was wide awake: I was chosen to represent the EMC Elect at the EMC “Redefine Possible” MegaLaunch event in London (UK)! I knew about these launch events because my colleague Rob attended one last year in Milan. Excitement started building and a couple of hours later I figured out I wasn’t going alone…

EMC World 2014 – Redefine your storage

EMC World 2014 Las Vegas StripEMC World 2014 is back in town, this time with the REDEFINE punchline. After some logistic challenges to get here the show is on the road; general sessions, break-out sessions, hands on labs (HOL). So what’s up with the REDEFINE punchline? What are we redefining in the IT / data infrastructure? And what are the EMC Elect doing at EMC World when not flooding your Twitter feed?

EMC World – Day 4 – VNX: Leverage SSD in a VNX

Hitachi Ultrastar SSD400S SSD FamilyWelcome to the (mini-)series on VNX Performance and how to leverage SSD in a VNX systems. You can find part one on skew and data placement over here. The second post discussed the improvements for FAST Cache in VNX OE 32. This third and final post will discuss some of the ideal use cases for SSD in a VNX.

If you’ve got SSD in a VNX you can use it in two ways: as FAST Cache or as an extreme performance tier in your storage pools (FAST VP). Either of these implementations has advantages and disadvantages and they can also be used concurrently (i.e. use FAST Cache AND FAST VP). It depends on what you want to do…

EMC World – Day 4 – VNX: FAST Cache improvements in R32

Hitachi Ultrastar SSD400S SSD FamilyThis is the second post in a (mini-)series on VNX Performance and how to leverage SSD in VNX systems. You can find part one on skew and data placement over here. This post will dive deeper into the FAST Cache improvements that have been added in VNX OE R32.

If you’ve got SSD drives in a VNX you can use it in two ways: as FAST Cache or as an extreme performance tier in your storage pools (FAST VP). Either of these implementations has advantages and disadvantages and they can also be used concurrently (i.e. use FAST Cache AND FAST VP). It depends on what you want to do…

The last post ended with some improvements in VNX OE R32. But there is more…

EMC World – Day 4 – VNX: Skew & Data Placement

Hitachi Ultrastar SSD400S SSD FamilyThe last breakout session I attended at EMC World 2013 was titled “Leveraging SSD: Designing for FAST Cache & FAST VP on Unified Storage”. By far one of the best breakout sessions of the week for me: technical and I can apply it in the field on pretty much a daily basis!

But let’s start at the beginning: first you need to figure out your skew! What?!

EMC World – Day 2 – ViPR: Software Defined Storage

ViPR logoThe theme of EMC World 2013 is the Software Defined Datacenter. Once of the big announcements is ViPR, which promises to be the Logitech Harmony remote for the storage infrastructure. Instead of having to do all the steps of storage provisioning manually, ViPR will automate most of these steps. The goal: more efficient management and a much faster time to implement at lower cost. And just look at the logo… that alone is worth buying the product! 😉
